Spock's Beard (named after the infamous facial features of Alternate Universe Spock) is a rock band from California. They may be regarded as the Boisterous Bruiser of Progressive Rock, and one of the bands that saved the genre from the Scrappy Heap.
After a good ten years' run as one of the world's leading Progressive Rock outfits, Face of the Band and main composer Neal Morse got religion and left the band in pursuit of a Christian Rock career. In a career move similar to their great example Genesis, the band has continued with drummer Nick d' Virigillio taking up the singer's mantle and recently released their tenth album X to great acclaim. Once he left, he got replaced with Ted Leonard and Jimmy Keegan.
Not to be confused with the band S.P.O.C.K
- A Good Name for a Rock Band
- Angry Mob Song: "Devil's Got My Throat" from Snow
- Badass Beard: And none of them even have a beard.
- The Band Minus the Face: Twice. First, when Neal Morse left to pursue a Christian career, then when Nick D'Virgillio left to work on Cirque Du Soleil.
- Christian Rock: Neal Morse's current occupation. Really awesome Christian Progressive Rock.
- Chronological Album Title - V and X.
- Cluster F-Bomb: A pretty notorious section (titled FU) in the epic "The Water". The narrator subsequently apologizes for it.
- Concept Album / Rock Opera: Snow
- Counterpoint Duet: One of the band's trademarks are multy-layerd vocal bits In the Style Of Gentle Giant.
- Cover Version: "Beware of Darkness", originally from George Harrison. Strangely, they named a whole album after it.
- Epic Instrumental Opener: Snow has one.
- Epic Rocking: Oooh yeah
- Five-Man Band
- The Hero: Neal / Nick
- The Lancer: Alan
- The Big Guy: Dave
- The Smart Guy: Ryo
- The Chick: Nick
- The Sixth Ranger: Jimmy
- Non-Action Guy: John Boegehold
- Gratuitous Japanese: "Wherever You Stand", "Kamikaze"
- Heroic Albino: The title character of Snow.
- Hijacked by Jesus: Snow. By extension, Neal Morse himself.
- Keet: Ryo
- Large Ham: The whole band, but especially Ryo and Nick.
- List Song: "Their Names Exape Me" lists the names of all who pre-ordered the deluxe package of X.
- Lonely Piano Piece: "Hereafter"
- Mohs Scale of Rock and Metal Hardness: Generally ranges from 3 to 5, with occasional ventures into 6.
- My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: Appropiately, "A Flash Before My Eyes".
- New Sound Album: Octane. It didn't last.
- Power Ballad: "June", "Ghosts of Autumn", "She Is Everything"
- Rockstar Song: "Rearranged", written by Nick d'Virgillio. Whether he actually is a rockstar is up for debate.
- Rule of Cool: Apparently, this is why their ninth album is self-titled.
- Signature Song: "The Light"
- Subdued Section: Most 5min+ songs have one.
- Uncommon Time: Actually, the band uses Common Time as much as they do Uncommon Time. They are quite fond of 7/8, though.
