A real-life [[Battle Boomerang|boomerang]] is simply a stick carved in such a way as to get some rotor lift when thrown turning end-over-end. Thrown properly, the boomerang will curve back on its course and return to its point of origin. It was designed for hunting fowl and returned for another shot if the hunter missed the first time (if it hit, the hunter would have to retrieve the kill anyway). Bigger ones retain enough of energy on return to injure the thrower if not caught, which probably is one of the reasons why real-life ''battle'' boomerang don't return, but fly straight - they still have greater range and cross-section (therefore chance to hit) than purely ballistic thrown weapons. Some boomerangs allow for more complex trajectories, though these are more for sport than hunting.
