The John Newbery Medal, one of many awards given out by the American Library Association annually for children's literature. John Newbery was an 18th century bookseller; the award has been given out since 1921 and is the oldest award for children literature currently existing and is probably the most prestigious children's lit award in the US.

Given in two levels: The bronze Newbery Medal is given to the winner out of all the year's nominees while the silver "Newbery Honor" seal is given to the runners-up. Both tend to get prominently displayed on book covers.

There's an observed trend for Newbery Medal books to be Tear Jerkers; see Death by Newbery Medal.
