• Awesome Music:
  • Amazingly, every episode of the series so far has had a song sung by a different member of the gang. But the best one by far is Nelson's song "Breaking Up Is Such A Faff" in Episode 6.
  • Not quite every episode. In episode 5, Nelson tries to sing to Destiny about his love for her, but she ends up being dragged away by Gary shortly after the song begins. However, to make up for this, he sings lead on two songs across the whole series instead of one like everyone else.
• Complete Monster:
  • It can't be denied, every character in the show has come under this in no more than the first five episodes in the name of Black Comedy. Destiny for example refuses to rescue a drowning child in case she messes up her hair, Kali eats Nelson's wife after inadvertantly killing her, Vince eats CHILDREN,in two episodes no less, one case being particuarly jarring because he couldn't find a SPOON for his Muller Yoghurts. the list goes on. Even the neurotic but nice Nelson is coming under this after willfully marrying his sister Admittedly, this could be considered justified because they are animals, but at the end of the day it's making the whole cast increasingly hard to root for.
  • To make Vince's incident of eating children even worse, they were his OWN offspring!
  • The first time, the second time it was Nelson and Kali's, she was disappointed that her attempt to create a master race of super predators resulted in an ordinary pigeon with red feathers so she had Vince dispose of it.
  • And now, there is a whole song dedicated to Vince's complete monsterness. And it is Catchy as hell.
• Crossing the Line Twice: Like many UK sitcoms Mongrels is dedicated to offending as many people as possible solely in the name of a good hearty laugh.
• Dude, Not Funny:
  • Things like 9/11 and Vince eating his children.
  • The creators seem to realise these Unfortunate Implications with some dialogue in episode 8.

Nelson: It's nothing to do with religion. Marion: Yes, it's nothing to do with religion. Random person: Just to clarify, it's nothing to do with religion. All: Aside Glance

• • One reviewer in the Daily Mail thought this about a Cutaway Gag involving Dr. Shipman.
• Ear Worm:
  • A few of them, especially F*** Chickens.
  • Vince's song in the fourth episode of series two.

He robbed me, knifed me, shot me, he poured acid down my front, he managed to castrate me even though the knife was blunt.

• Ensemble Darkhorse: Vince.
• Family-Unfriendly Aesop: Nelson dates a chicken in the first episode, which is treated like an interracial relationship... but then the chicken turns out to be evil.
• Ho Yay:
  • The circle stroking mentioned above, and one of Marion's attempts to break up Nelson and his sister (Nelson's sister, not Marion's) involved dressing in drag and claiming to be his wife.
  • Nelson And Vince get a lot of Ho Yay when they are stuck in the "Island" and actually end up having sex.
• Les Yay: Episode 3 involves Kali and a lesbian crow.
• Memetic Mutation:
  • "Oi!" - a minor one but nevertheless.
  • Not that minor for those of us who attended Eurofurence 16 and had to suffer from this all through the convention...
• Periphery Demographic: For understandable reasons, the show is quite popular among UK's Furry Fandom.
• What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids?: Timeslot and general tone of humour not withstanding of course.
