Magica Madoka Veneficus Puella is a now-deleted Puella Magi Madoka Magica fanfic by The Moiderah of Writing on Fanfiction.net. It follows an Alternate Continuity in which Homura dies fighting Walpurgis Nacht, and Madoka wishes for a world in which her friends can survive.

She gets it.

Now, not only are the Puella Magi (now called Veneficus Puella) and the witches more powerful; the Muggles are now fully aware of the whole system, there is internal conflict between the Incubators, and the magic system has been turned on its head. Both Madoka and Homura are the only ones completely unaware of the new changes, and have to adapt. Fast.

Notable for having an author who may or may not be One of Us.

Tropes used in Magica Madoka Veneficus Puella include:

• Adult Fear: When Homura goes apeshit, guess what everyone, including Madoka's mother, sees? Images of her dying. Over and over again. And she can't do anything to stop it.
  • Worse when you remember that one of those "deaths" was a Mercy Kill wherein Homura was asked by Madoka to shoot her Soul Gem to prevent her turning into a witch. Imagine watching your child in pain and just begging to die, not to mention Madoka ended up turning into a witch in some timelines.
• All According to Plan: Just when things are going smoothly for the heroines, the Incubators hatch a plan to manipulate Madoka and EnBey into forcing Homura to become a Veneficus Puella. The result? Madoka is incapacitated in battle, and Homura, filled to the brim with guilt for being unable to protect Madoka past and present, unleashes destructive powers beyond EnBey's control. Plus the Incubators may very well have a better source of energy to exploit.
  • And if Word of God is something to follow by, this may have been canon!Kyubey's intent all along when he had to pick a universe to drop Madoka and Homura into way back in the beginning.
• All There in the Manual: See Spacebattles thread.
• Alternate Universe: Subverted and Deconstructed. Madoka and Homura still remember the old world, and they have to learn how to roll with the punches. Quickly.
  • And of course It Gets Worse. It turns out that there was a Madoka from this universe, and she's been trapped in the canon 'verse.
• And I Must Scream: Some of the Remnants, witches who manage to sort of regain human form, are perfectly aware of their situation, while being unable to think clearly enough to act.
• Apocalypse How: If Homura becomes a witch, it'll be an X-3+ at least (a good chunk of the universe is destroyed), provided that she isn't stopped. Same thing could easily happen if she contracts with EnBey and Madoka dies.
  • VP!Homura nearly caused a Class 0 at absolute minimum, but thanks to Madoka Taking A Level In Warrior Therapist, she was pulled back from the Despair Event Horizon and banished her demons.
  • Word of God states "VP!Homura can destroy several universes if she wants to.", putting her squarely as potential X-5.
  • Recently, something along the lines of an X-4 seems to have happened in the original universe Madoka and Homura were from, with their alternates paying the price.
• Apocalypse Maiden: Homura in the VP!-verse, Sayaka becomes one in the original PM-verse.
• Author Avatar: EnBey, if this Spacebattles post is any indication.
• Badass Adorable: Homura, who's got her glasses back.
  • Madoka, who can now spam crossbows.
• Badass Normal: Guess who was?
  • Junko now seems to have taken up the void
• Berserk Button: Do not harm Madoka in any way, or Homura will hurt you. EnBey is not exempt from this.
  • Same with Yoshio and Sayaka.
• Brought Down to Normal: Homura. It doesn't inconvenience her very much.
• Break the Cutie: Thought Sayaka got a raw deal in the original? In this fic, she was broken before the damn thing even began. It Gets Worse. She might be better off for it.
  • Yoshio Kiyomizu, the saved/recovered human remnant of witch Elly.
• Broken Bird: VPuniverse!Madoka, being transported to a canon universe and undergoing the same process that Homura did in canon, for Sayaka's sake.
• Butt Monkey: The News Crew. The poor guys can't ever seem to get a break.
  • But they always will break the news, and then proceed to get broken.
• Calling Your Attacks: Mami, as taught by Kazuko.
  • And Sayaka who uses Irish for the naming of her moves. Madoka uses French.
• Canis Latinicus: "Magica Madoka Venificus Puella" means "Magical Madoka [evil, lit. poisonous] Magic Girl". With "magic" as a noun, this kills the grammar--making the title make exactly as little sense as the original, reflect the world as it is post-wish, and just plain sound cool.
  • Fridge Brilliance: There is no denying that the title is worded wrongly. However, take a moment to take a look at the order of the words, and compare it with the original title. The title of this fanfic is a Sdrawkcab Title, which makes reference to how everything in this continuity has been figuratively turned upside down!
    • Fridge Horror: Veneficus Puella can be translated to mean "wizard girl", or more simply "witch". In fact, the feminine form of veneficus does mean witch.
• Cast Full of Gay / Everyone Is Bi: Only two-three people are confirmed lesbians... but every other female with a decent appearance is either bi or lesbian (with the exception of Yoshio, but only because we don't know yet).
  • Word of God puts it at 4 lesbians, 3 bisexuals, 1 straight, 1 Single-Target Sexuality (in reality a lesbian, putting that count at 5), 2 "undeveloped" (aka too young)
  • Lampshaded by Sayaka in chapter 12.
• Cloudcuckoolander: The author, if the Author's Notes at the end are any indication:

  • He has recently^[when?] implied himself to be a brony. Welcome to the herd!
• Cluster F-Bomb: EnBey, in very stark contrast to the rest of his kind.
  • Everyone, except Madoka (not counting when TorBey is influencing her) swears multiple times.
• Crack Fic: One of the main characters is a swearing Incubator, the fights are ludicrous, and the number of references in every chapter is enormous. The most sane thing in the fic is the world, and even that's slightly unhinged.
• Crapsack World: The world's political systems are streamlined for use by the Veneficus Puellae, the death rate is significantly lower for the girls, and the Incubator that is provided isn't actively trying to screw them over. These are good things. Meanwhile, the witches cause horrible collateral damage, the inhabitants are still incredibly disagreeable, and some are willing to rape, torture, and kill recovered Remnants out of a misguided sense of "Justice".
• Cryptic Conversation: Played with in the sense that most of the Cryptic Conversations are about what is considered common knowledge, but neither Madoka nor Homura have that knowledge. Essentially, it's an aversion of As You Know.
  • Notably there are a number of references to some sort of horrible incident involving Oriko. Real Life Writes the Plot is probably in play here, as most of those references were from before Oriko Magica was released (and when it was still thought Oriko was the green-haired girl on the cover, to boot!)
• Dark and Troubled Past: As per the original, this exists in spades.
• Dark Is Not Evil: All Veneficus Puella outfits are black and made of demons.
• Deadpan Snarker: EnBey, Sayaka, Homura, Mami, Kyouko, Kazuko...let's just say that there's a lot of snark flying around.
  • In a meta-example, the author is one, too.
• Dead Line News: A reporter and his cameraman are killed during a live broadcast of a Witch attack.
• Deconstruction: Naturally.
• Determinator: Homura, who gets clubbed and beaten by lord knows how many Torbeys and keeps a perfectly straight face afterwords. Lampshaded by EnBey.
• Destructive Saviour: Reconstructed. If it weren't for the Veneficus Puellae, the witches would be completely unstoppable. Despite the damage that is caused by each fight (which is mostly repaired by the witches' magic release), the Veneficus Puellae are actually thanked, and even celebrated, for their service.
• Despair Event Horizon: Homura nearly crossed it, which could have lead to the destruction of Earth. Thankfully, Madoka was there to pull her back.
• Deconstruction Fic: Take everything about your typical Puella Magi Fix Fic, put it in a blender, bash it on the head until its brains pop out, throw in some crack, light it on fire, put it out, fix up its head, and you get this fanfic.
• Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: People's general reacton to Homura punching EnBey in the face.
  • VPuniverse!Madoka does this to Madokami.
• Does Not Like Men: Sayaka
• Eldritch Abomination: The witches, obviously. But then again, TorBey and the other Incubators have elements of this too.
• Escape From the Crazy Place: The general plot for many of the characters in Episode 21-22.
• Even Evil Has Standards: Enbey is a jerkass to the nth degree, but he draws the line at entering girl's rooms.

Enbey: "I may be a tiny thingamabob, but there is no way in hell that I'm going to invade a little girl's home just to ask her a few questions. The thought's kind of creepy, really."

• Even More Evil Twin: TorBey compared to KyuBey.
  • On the other hand, Enbey is Kyubey's Good But Dickish Twin.
• Eyes of Gold: Alternate!Kyubey.
• Failure Is the Only Option: EnBey knows he's racing against three things: the next Walpurgis Nacht, TorBey turning Homura into a witch, and Madoka's death. If any of these come to pass very bad things will happen. So what does he do? Contracts Homura. Which backfires. Spectacularly.
• Fantastic Racism: Possibly. Kyouko exterminates entire clans of familiars if just one of them steps out of line.
• Fix Fic: Subverted. Magical Girls now have an Incubator that isn't trying to screw them over, but there are still witches around, more powerful/deadly than before, and the other Incubator makes Kyubey look nice in comparison.
• Flechette Storm: Madoka's more impressive attacks are this.
• Frying Pan of Doom:
• Gatling Good: Mami.
• Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today?: Mild version since this is a Mirror Universe, but according to Word of God, Hitomi had a coming out party... to say she's straight.
• Hero with Bad Publicity: Invoked by TorBey, who turns the girls' quirks against them to the public.
• Immortality Begins At Twenty: A very mild version. Veneficus who turned 18 age three times slower than normal people.
• In Harm's Way: Being Brought Down to Normal has not impeded Homura's willingness to protect Madoka from harm, be it Jerkass Starfish Aliens or overzealous reporters, or her desire to kill TorBeys by the hundreds. Having an inhuman amount of experience helps.
• In Spite of a Nail: Justified. Madoka's wish has to make sure that her friends are born in order for them to survive. Also, the world has to be at least somewhat recognizable.
• Jackass Genie: TorBey. He doesn't even give any indication of his presence, acting as a voice in a person's head until they listen and make a wish...which he fulfills by instantly making them a witch.
• Jerkass: EnBey, oh so very much.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold / Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: EnBey can only feel negative emotions. However, they give him a sense of morality. He however does cut the swearing and goes as straight forward as he can when meeting with Junko privately in chapter 12.
• Knight Templar: Played with. Sayaka is more accepting of the injustice of the world than she is in canon but anyone who hurts the people she cares about are in serious trouble. Interestingly, Kyouko doesn't seem bothered by Sayaka wailing on people and leaving them to die...probably because in this world she has some Knight Templar traits herself, as those familiars found out.
• Let's You And Her Fight: Invoked by EnBey by uttering this very line. Although this is a subversion, as the fight was suggested by him as a practice between Kyouko and Sayaka.
• Lensman Arms Race: And Incubator version of it.
• Lighter and Softer: Subverted. Things are better for the girls, but the death toll and collateral damage is horrifying, and TorBey is very unpleasant.
  • The fact that some of their pasts were made worse than what they already were does not help matters.
• Macross Missile Massacre: Sayaka's Rianúlann! "Tracking Blade" is a magical version of this. In the same battle, Kyouko uses her own by shoving her polearms into the ground and having the blades fly off into the sky.
• Meaningful Name: Well, probably. Like Puella Magi, Veneficus Puella can still be thought of as "young girl magician", or "young witch". Now consider the nature of the Mirror Universe, the fact that magical girls are powered by despair, and that Madoka and Sayaka's magical girl outfits are somewhat evocative of their witch forms...
• Mercy Kill: Mami performs one on a Remnant. Madoka completely misinterprets that, showing Mami that she doesn't know plenty of things that should be common knowledge.
• Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: Being Homura sucks.
• Mirror Universe: It's not a perfect mirror, but there's plenty of examples.
  • The whole system is public knowledge.
  • Enbey is basically the anti-Kyubey, right down to being black instead of white.
  • Charlotte goes Clipped-Wing Angel instead of One-Winged Angel.
  • Witches don't comes from Grief Seeds; they come from Soul Seeds. Meanwhile, magical girls don't have Soul Gems; they have Grief Gems. In other words, magical girls are powered by despair. In fact, a person needs to have enough grief in order to contract in the first place.
    • Mami at one point says that despair brings hope.
  • Because of the above Homura is now the most powerful potential magical girl...and TorBey is interested in her.
    • Also, when EnBey visualizes her grief, it forms a massive form that towers over the city. Just like Krimehild Gretchen.
  • Sayaka's first outing as a Veneficus is a double reflection: She rescues a girl that became a witch, just as others tried and failed to do for her in the original universe.
  • Mami doesn't live alone, Sayaka does.
  • Kyouko is hunting familiars and ends up being reprimanded for it.
  • Sayaka finds an orphaned girl whose name starts with letter Y and becomes her caretaker and big sister figure.
  • Sayaka still attacks two men whose ultimate fates are left unknown... in an entirely different context.
  • Sayaka has a Dead Little Sister.
  • In this context, the discussion of the book No Longer Human at the beginning of Chapter 10 is basically a joke. It's mostly unchanged.
  • In Chapter 12 Homura contracts...and it unleashes demons on the world. In other words, canon-Madoka became god, Veneficus-Homura became the devil.
  • The author is now running with this. In Episode 14 (Chapter 16), someone tries to call 119. Oh, and also Yuuri and Airi are members of the Pleiades Saints.
  • Hell, the title itself is a mirror: Puella Magi Madoka Magica|Magica Madoka Veneficus Puella
• Mitakihara Is The Center Of The Universe
• Multiverse: The timeline at the start, the current timeline, and well, the original Madoka and Homura from the timeline they're now in had to be sent somewhere.
• My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Enbey is quite possibly the only Incubator that has any emotions (although they're all negative) and any sense of morality similar to ours. There is a very good reason for this.
• Mythology Gag: Homura saves Madoka from a bunch of Red Shirt Reporters by bashing the camera with a baseball bat.
  • EnBey refuses to go into Madoka's room, because he think it's creepy for him, a Starfish Alien, to invade a little girl's privacy.
  • In Episode 14/Chapter 16, EnBey says this about two magical girls: "They're calm, cool, collected, and work perfectly as a pair". He's talking about Yuuri and Airi. It's even more amusing that they're being called to Mitakihara to keep an eye on Sayaka - Canon!Yuuri and Canon!Sayaka have Counterpart Comparison, while Canon!Airi is someone who would agree with killing the people who hurt those you care about.
• Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Having Homura contract via EnBey? All part of the TorBey collective's plan.
• No Endor Holocaust: Completely averted. The collateral damage caused by each fight is enormous at worst, and large at best.
• Noodle Incident: Whatever happened with Oriko and the incident that banned Kyouko from Mitakihara (involving a rock thrown through a window).
  • Madoka's fight with Sayaka.
• Oh Crap: EnBey and Kyouko's reaction to how much power Homura really is packing
• The Omniscient Council of Vagueness: the last scene in each chapter makes allusions to it, but ch 12 hammers it home that there's more than just TorBey and KyuBey working together.
• One of Us: EnBey. Quoting tropes, referencing crappy fanfics, it's only a matter of time before he starts turning people into light with a hammer.
• Really Seven Hundred Years Old: It's implied that Homura is this, when she discovers that she's been Brought Down to Normal, she casually mentions that it's the first time she's had to wear glasses in centuries".
  • Hold on, there. I'd also expect her to say "I haven't played Smash Bros. in centuries" afterwards.
• Reconstruction
• Relationship Upgrade: Madoka and Homura in Chapter 11. Naturally, tragedy strikes not long after.
• Retired Badass: Kazuko, who was once a Veneficus Puella. EnBey is terrified of her.
• Rule of Cool: Runs on it.
• Schoolgirl Lesbians: Sayaka, possibly Homura, maybe...oh, fuck it.
• Scary Shiny Glasses: Homura
• Serial Escalation: How over-the-top can the fights get? How much property damage can occur in every single fight? How big can the weapons get?! How many of them will be spammed?!
  • Thought KyuBey was an unethical monstrosity that should-not-be? Meet TorBey and his[their] master, who makes the former contender for "biggest Jackass in Anime" look completely ethical in comparison, downright planning on harvesting every soul on the planet as energy by turning them directly into Witches.
• Spin-Off: The author has written a fic about Kazuko in the nineties, and is currently preparing to write about the Oriko incident.
• Starfish Alien: The Incubators, naturally, but really driven home by TorBey:

Tsk. Such a waste of our[mine{their flesh} bodies] energy...We[I{They}] do not appreciate this wasteful nature, EnBey.

• • TorBey's speech pattern (quoted above) is quite possibly a Shout-Out to how Arael speaks in NGE: Nobody Dies.
• Stepford Smiler: An argument can be made she was this in canon, but Sayaka.
• There Is No Kill Like Overkill: This seems to be a common theme with Mami and Madoka. Especially Mami.
• Took a Level in Badass: EVERYONE. Even the Incubators.
  • Special mention goes to Homura, who despite being Brought Down to Normal, kicks just as much ass as before. She even knocks down a particularly disagreeable bus passenger while still asleep.
• Up to Eleven: Compare Mami's finishers for starters.
• Wave Motion Gun: Mami's Fine Sciopero (End Strike). It involves several cannons the size of a bus firing simultaneously.
• Wham! Line: In Chapter 7: "I happen to live alone". Followed by "Even I don't live alone!" The wham comes from who says them: Sayaka says the first one, the second is Mami's response.
• The Wiki Rule: In-universe, there's a wiki on Veneficus Puella. It's also lampshaded.

"There's a wiki?" Oh, of course there was a wiki--it was PUBLIC.

• X Meets Y: Madoka Magica meets Nobody Dies.
• Yuri Fan: Junko, in spades. Her own daughter is not exempt from this. To a much lesser extent Hitomi (or well, from what we've seen. She definitely tries to push Sayaka/Madoka at one point).
