* ''[[Punch-Out!!]]'' is a boxing game (well, sort of)<ref>Or rather, a [[Puzzle Game]] using a boxing theme</ref> that does not even try to adhere to any rules of organized boxing. Note that these examples all follow the rules put forth by the Association of Boxing Commissions, and we’ll leave Aran Ryan out, as he is specifically designed to be a rotten cheater:
** Little Mac himself seems to be a pretty standard boxer following the Commission's standard rules, the only action that might be construed as cheating being healing himself with Doc Brown’s chocolate between rounds. However, his given age is 17, and he shouldn’t be allowed to compete until age 18. Plus, it seems whoever is in charge does not use weight classes at all. In actual boxing, someone his size wouldn’t be allowed to fight huge guys like King Hippo and Bald Bull, and for good reason - he'd be killed.
** A lot of Mac’s opponents wear protective clothing, which is obviously an infraction of the rules. Glass Joe usually follows the rules except in his Title Defense match where he wears headgear. While a cutscene does show this is recommended by a doctor, bodily protection is obviously not allowed in real boxing unless both boxers have one. Otherwise, hats or other headgear are not allowed in competitive boxing. Disco Kid actually wears headphones, a device an unscrupulous boxer might use to get information from a third party; not saying he does, but such a device isn’t allowed. King Hippo wears a ''freakin manhole'' over his gut in his Title Bout, and as bad as that is, he keeps it on with duct tape, and the rules prohibit a fighter from putting tape on his body.
** Two well-known illegal move in boxing is hitting your opponent with a backhand strike or on the side of the head. Von Kaiser, Super Macho Man, King Hippo, Bear Hugger, Great Tiger, and Don Flamenco all do one or both of these in special moves, and seeing as in all of those moves can knock Mac down instantly if they connect, it's easy to see ''why'' they are illegal.
** Many boxers in this game wear clothing that violates the official rules, which say shorts must be loose fitting and extend no further than the knee, so as better to recognize low blows, which is an illegal move. (As in, “hitting below the belt”} Von Kaiser wears pants with suspenders, and tucks the pants into his boots. Disco Kid is worse. His outfit in the Title Bout is a one-piece leotard that doesn’t even have a belt; also not allowed, as the rules say there must be something to differentiate the shorts from the top (most boxers don’t have a top). He’s practically asking for a low hit.
** Speaking of King Hippo, his weight, height, and nationality are listed as unknown. Yes, obviously a crack at him being overweight, but since weight and height are an essential part of boxing, he would not be allowed to keep them secret. He wouldn’t even be allowed to get a license if he did that.
** Bear Hugger ([[Canada, Eh?]]) has the same problems as Van Kaiser AND Disco Kid, given his overalls, and wears a hat in the Title Bout, plus he has a bushy beard to boot. Rules of boxing say you must be clean-shaven or have short, well-groomed facial hair, so that's another mark against Hugger. Also, you cannot consume anything other than water between rounds, and Hugger spends that time drinking ''maple syrup'', of all things. His biggest rule violation is bringing his pet squirrel into the ring - the reason he has that hat. Rules say only the fighters and referee can enter the ring once the fight starts.
** Ahem, Flying Tiger (Great Tiger in the Wii version). Disregarding how he uses magic to fight [[Captain Obvious|(don’t think there’s any real-life rule against that)]], he wears a turban (already covered above), pants (again, covered above), and leaves the ring during the fight, which would be grounds for instant disqualification. His turban is sort of a grey area; while that might be consider a hat (covered above) it could also be considered a religious headpiece, and therefor permitted.
** Don Flameco is pretty legit, other than his toupe (again, already covered) but he breaks the rules in a way few notice, using cologne on himself between rounds. This is illegal for many reasons, including its potential use as an irritant to the other boxer and that it could cause the gloves to slip off. But the biggest reason is, a boxer is only allowed to keep three specific substances in the corner, an adrenaline solution, avitine, and thrombin. Anything else is contraband.
** Soda Popinski not only breaks the same rule as Bear Hugger by drinking soda during the match<ref>Disregarding the original version, of course, where he drinks vodka, which is even worse.</ref>, he’s bringing foreign objects into the ring. Plus he’s a sloppy drinker, and is thus breaking the same rule Flameco does, just not as clean. Worst of all, as cutscenes show, it’s not regular soda, it’s stuff some group of doctors developed to make him super strong. Yeah, he’s doping, an unforgivable crime in sports.
