After Lately is a scripted comedy best described as The Office meets Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia meets Curb Your Enthusiasm. Which is weird, considering that it airs on E!.
There is some logic to to this: the show is a Spin-Off of Chelsea Lately, which is somewhat more typical E! fare, being a talk show centered on celebrity news. However, the tone is quite different: while Chelsea Lately is all about Chelsea Handler making fun of celebrities, After Lately is about the writers, and the celebrity most often insulted is Chelsea herself, who comes off as a younger, female version of Larry David.
Tropes used in After Lately include:
- Fawlty Towers Plot
- Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: Pretty much everybody, but particularly Chelsea herself.
