* ''Synopsis'': Follows the story of a family of powerful black dragons... and the story of a boy called Arren Cardockson who would one day become Galbatorix. [[Alternate Character Interpretation]] done right, it turns the original story on its head.
* ''Comments'': The whole thing is several times longer than the whole ''[[Inheritance Cycle]]'', but don't let that put you off, because I enjoyed every minute of it. The author manages to take everything that was canon up through book 2, turn it on its head, and make the [[Big Bad]] out to be [[The Hero]] and vice-versa while telling an engaging story. There's a lot of original characters, who are all well-realized and interesting. The series does tend to slant dark, and [[Anyone Can Die]], so be warned, but it can also be funny and genuinely touching just as often, and is definitely worth a read.
