I have no interest in ordinary chibis!

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-chan (Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yūutsu) and Nyoron Churuya-san are two gag manga spinoffs of Haruhi Suzumiya, animated and broadcast on YouTube as three to five-minute shorts. Though famous for "trolling" on their fanbase as of late, Kyoto Animation was rumored to produce this series' as a way to pacify the fans for waiting 3 years for an actual 2nd Season of Haruhi!

Both series have now reached their conclusions, with Haruhi-chan 25 and Nyoro~n 13 being the last episodes. Both are available on Crunchyroll, along with the regular Haruhi Suzumiya episodes.

Bandai has licensed both series and released them on two DVD sets. Haruhi-chan's manga is licensed by Yen Press.

Faux Symbolism at its most WTF.

Tropes used in Haruhi-chan include:

• Actor Allusion:
  • Look at Haruhi's face and tell me that isn't Konata! Her voice in Haruhi-chan even sounds like Konata's. (Unsurprising, since Aya Hirano plays both characters.)
  • Yuki Nagato sings "Paradise Lost" by Minori Chihara at the end of Episode 6. She also plays Kagura Tsuchimuya in that series.
  • Achakura holding an umbrella to open a door is a reference to Rozen Maiden, seeing as Natsuko Kuwatani does her and Suiseiseki. And hearing her say DESU~ really reminds people of Suiseiseki, DESU~
• All CGI Cartoon - The first few episodes.
• Anachronic Order - Just like with the anime's first run and the Light Novels, the Haruhi-chan shorts are arranged differently than the manga.
• Angrish - Achakura lapses into this when Nagato gives her dog food in a dog bowl to eat.
• Art Shift:
  • The characters may go back to their normal-looking selves for a gag (and at one point Bishoujo, before reverting back to Super-Deformed style.
  • Yuki's doujin Visual Novel.
• Astronomic Zoom:
  • Every episode of Haruhi-chan except for episode 25 begins with this.

• Author Appeal - Mori-san certainly appears a lot- she's even the focus of the first story in volume 4, where Koizumi gets her to cosplay as Haruhi. And if that's not enough to convince you, there's a surprising amount of bonus art of her in casual clothes or with her hair in a ponytail.
• Badass - Tsuruya, especially in Episode 21.
  • Mori even more so.
• Badass Santa - Haruhi's concept of Santa, part of a clan of super-muscled old ninjas who infiltrate houses and deposit gifts. And she turns poor Taniguchi into one.
• Bad Bad Acting - In episode 20.

Achakura: (monotone) Oh, no. Kimidori-san has gone flat. Kimidori: (equally monotone) I can't go on. Please commit my body to the ocean. Achakura: (monotone) Sorry, throwing you in the ocean will be environmental destruction.

• Battle Aura - Used for a game of dodgeball!
• Big Eater - Yuki gobbling Valentine's day chocolates... priceless.
• Bishonen
  • Kyon and Itsuki get bishie shots in their host suits in episode 12, complete with Bishie Sparkles.
  • In the episode where the whole group is having a scavenger hunt Kyon, as part of the game, tells Itsuki that he loves him, causing Itsuki's face to go totally bishonen, or arguably bishojo, complete with Dramatic Wind and flower petals.
• Black Helicopter - Used by the Agency in one episode.
• Blank White Eyes
• Blatant Lies - Mori after she just jumped through a window.

  • Haruhi, after... taking story suggestions for an amateur film. To the extent that she had to be hospitalized, even.

• Blow You Away - Tsuruya, as shown in Episode 17. Poor Mikuru.

• Boke and Tsukkomi Routine - Yuki's interactions with Achakura seem to follow these quite closely. Yuki's the boke.

  • Achakura contemplates her previous life, until Kimidori says "I'm not going to let you turn this into a complete episode."

• Brother-Sister Incest - This might be stretching things, but judging from episode 25's opening, Nagato's game contains a "Kyon's sister" route, so if Kyon's the protagonist...
• Butt Monkey
  • Taniguchi and Achakura.
  • To some extent Kyon, who always gets the short end of Haruhi's plans. It's a bit like his role in the series turned Up to Eleven.
• Came Back Wrong - Played for Laughs. When Ryoko Asakura manages to regenerate herself as Achakura, she's barely a couple feet tall, and has lost most of her powers. Not to mention that she has a somewhat childish mentality sometimes, being placated by a merry-go-round treatment, karaoke singing, the "legendary" obi-spin, and a piece of chocolate cake. Later in the manga it's revealed that Asakura can use her powers to a certain extent, but doing so causes her to become even tinier! Kimidori-san shows real concern that if she overdoes it she'll wink out of existence.
• Camera Abuse - The Astronomic Zoom mentioned above always ends in the camera smashing into Haruhi's face.
• Catch Phrase - Yuki's "Oh" after outbursts from Achakura.
  • The show's Catch Phrase is "Here we go!" which is said at the start of each episode.
• Cat Smile - Haruhi and Tsuruya.
• Character Exaggeration
  • Haruhi is more hyperactive than in the regular series.
  • Mikuru is more Moe than in the regular series.
  • Koizumi has stopped being remotely subtle in his Shipper on Deck activities, taking every opportunity to try to convince Kyon to couple up with Haruhi. Kyon's having none of it, although in volume 4 he's able to force Kyon and Haruhi to go on a scripted date together as a penalty game. They nearly die.
  • Subverted with Yuki, as her stoicness is overshadowed by her otakuness, which is hinted at in the original series, albeit not as played up. Look at the masks she buys in the Endless Eight. So it could be this subtle aspect is exaggerated even more, making it an exaggerated version of Character Exaggeration.
• Cherry Blossoms
• Clothing Damage - Itsuki's shirt gets ripped when Ms. Mori goes flying past him in episode 21.
• Continuity Cameo - Muu-chan, the "Mugen Lion".
• Continuity Nod - Several episodes feature references from previous episodes. For example, the Computer Club's fossilized kappa introduced in episode 5 was stolen by Taniguchi in episode 7. In episode 19, he snuck it back in disguised as Santa.
• Contrived Coincidence - In episode 19 Taniguchi dresses as Santa and sneaks into the school to put back a gift-wrapped kappa in the Computer Club's room on the same night that Haruhi is holding a Christmas party and has Kyon waiting in the Computer Room to catch Santa.
• Cooking Duel - With balloon animals and art, and it turns out Kyon and Haruhi don't know how to actually make them.
• Cosplay - Mikuru and Yuki engage in a cosplay contest. Haruhi is nonplussed.
• Cosplay Otaku Girl - Yuki.
• Counting Sheep - Zig zagged in the first episode.
• Covert Pervert - Yuki. Light on the 'Covert', but with extra 'Pervert'.
• Cranial Eruption - Yuki and Achakura do this to each other semi-regularly.
• Depending on the Writer - Deliberately exaggerated with Yuki, who doesn't just read books in this series.
• Determinator - Kyon, considering how often he blows up.

• Disappears Into Light - Kyon in episode 9. "Hikari ni naru!!!!"

• Everything's Better with Spinning - Yuki spins Achakura right round in episodes 6 and 8.
• Everything's Worse with Bears - Inverted. Tsuruya claims she once defeated a bear.
• Eyes Always Shut
  • Koizumi, all the time.
  • Kyon, every now and then, unless he has Blank White Eyes or is looking intense.
• Fan Service - Itsuki's randomly open shirt in episode 18.
• Faux Yay: Kyon's declaration of love to Koizumi, which nearly caused the world to end.
• Flipping the Table - Same idea. In Achakura's first episode she becomes increasingly irritated with her treatment by Yuki, culminating when Yuki tries to feed her what appears to be pet food in a doggie dish. Yuki claims that this is a joke and goes to give her some real food but leaves it in the doggie dish, so Achakura flips the dish. Achakura actually does this with a few of the things that Yuki gives her.
• Fun Size - Everyone, since they are in chibi form most of the time, but Achakura a step higher lower.
• Gag Series
• Gamer Chick - Yuki. Mostly Bishoujo Games.
• Getting Crap Past the Radar: "...and I'm Itsuki, the Crimson Super Ball. Guess why they call me that. Hollaaaa."
• Giving Up the Ghost: Happens to the Computer Club members after the dodgeball game in episode 5.
• Gratuitous English
  • "Trick or treat. Search and destroy."
  • "Nice Kyon!"
  • "Hey Kyon! Pass!"
  • "COME BAAAAAAAACK!!!"
  • "Too vague."
• Hatsuyume - The premise of Kyon's dream in episode 01, although with a twist. Koizumi is Mt. Fugi (actually just a regular mountain), Tsuruya is the hawk (or rather, a crane with the heart of a hawk), and Nagato is an eggplant cellphone strap.
• Heroic Sacrifice - Episode 24, by Kimidori.
• I Am Not Left-Handed - Mori pulls this in episode 21 during her rooftop fight with Tsuruya, by getting out of her costume.
• Idiot Hair - Much more noticeable here, always appears during Haruhi's silly moments.
• Implausible Fencing Powers
  • In Episode 16, when Yuki sets a sword to homing mode to cut an object in any way possible.
  • Subverted when Kyon tried it and his wrists got twisted and his body got thrown around like a ragdoll, since it was the first time he had ever used a sword.
• I'm Taking Her Home with Me - What Yuki does with Achakura. Although she doesn't do it because Achakura is cute, but rather so she can keep an eye on her.
• Info Dump - Parodied. When Yuki was describing a particularly nasty Sealed Evil in a Can, everyone else promptly announced that the explanation was too long and they couldn't understand it.
• I Was Just Passing Through - Frequent excuse made by Arakawa and Mori whenever Itsuki calls them in for favors.
• The Jimmy Hart Version - The theme for the Dating Sim intro sound like the Nursery Rhyme intro "True My Heart". An especially generic example, since "True My Heart" is already memetically generic.
• Luminescent Blush
  • Kyon of all people gets one after Yuki thanks him for the balloons.
  • Haruhi during her encounter with "Santa".
• Made of Explodium - Kyon.
• Moe: Could Mikuru possibly be any more Moe than she is in the main series? The answer is yes.
• Mood Whiplash
  • Every time Yuki abuses Achakura and then does something incredibly cute to make up for it.
  • Episode 24.
• Name's the Same - Kimidori the male living balloon animal is not Emiri Kimidori the female humanoid interface from the main series. We think.
  • No, Emiri Kimidori appears in the series as well. Both times she gets put into a swimsuit.
• Ninja Maid - Mori.
• Noodle Implements - Episode 3. We never find out exactly what the "Truck vs Kyon" event involves, but it's hard to forget the line "Here's your firework."
• Otaku Surrogate - Yuki.
• Paper-Thin Disguise
  • Mori as a "skydiver who just happened to be passing by"... without a parachute.
  • Arakawa counts to a lesser extent with his "taxi driver" who also "just happened to be passing by". Kyon calls them out almost immediately.
• Parody - The intro to the final episode is a Dating Sim intro parody.
• Puni Plush
• Punny Name - Achakura is a lisped version of Asakura. "Acha" can also be a "wince in pain" interjection, sometimes reacting to metaphoric pain or even someone else's pain. (E.g., watching someone get hit and saying, "Ooh, that's gotta hurt.")
• Really Dead Montage - Happens in episode 24 with Kimidori, as soon as the Time Bomb explodes. Subverted since he gets better.
• The Rival - Tsuruya vs Mori. This reaches Dragon Ball levels.
• Rule of Cute - Aww!!
  • Can I take Yuki-chan home with me?
  • I'd take in Achakura any day of the week, she's adorable.
  • Mikuru-chan's crying in episode 12 is the cutest thing ever! She sounds like a little kitten.
  • Kyon's Little Sister shows up in the second New Year's Eve dream sequence. She's half turned into a cow and is adorable!
• Rule of Funny - To be expected as it's a Gag Series.
• Running Gag
• The Scream - Achakura in episode 20.
• Serious Business - The balloon modelling contest, with Trash Talk from Haruhi and Kyon and Itsuki as the judge and commentator.
  • Also the dodgeball game. There's freaking battle auras for crying out loud!
• Sexy Silhouette Shower Scene - Non-chibi Yuki in episode 24.
• Shirtless Scene - Twice by Itsuki, and both completely unnecessary. He even gets called for one of those by Kyon.
• Shout-Out
  • One to a particular Epileptic Tree - that of Kyon being the real deity in the series - in episode 1. It's even lampshaded.
  • There's also "Yasu is the culprit" at the end of the second episode, a Shout-Out to The Reveal of a much beloved in Japan PC/NES mystery game, which had undergone Memetic Mutation. The reference thoroughly confused much of the western fanbase. The English dub replaces it with "The butler did it."
  • That lion that's seen with Mikuru looks a lot like Sakutaro from Umineko.
  • "Tuxedo Beard" anyone? Let's not forget Supernatural Ranger Team was mixed in.
  • It wasn't translated into English as such, but in episode 19 Kyon says "Ippen shinde miru?" to Haruhi.
  • Several episodes reference parts of Book 7: the Spring Setsubun Festival (episode 8), the Valentine's Day chocolate cakes (episodes 11 and 12), the treasure hunt (episodes 17 and 18), and Mori and Arakawa riding around in a taxi (episodes 12 and 18).
  • Kyon shouting "Hikari ni naru~" (see Disappears Into Light) is a direct Shout-Out to GaoGaiGar.
  • That ghostly Santa looks suspiciously like that red-eyed Santa Claus in Haré+Guu.
  • One of the lines in the intro is KA-ME-HA-ME-HA!
  • The fighting game that Nagato offers to play with Kyon is Street Fighter II with all the characters as cute girls
• Sinister Silhouettes - Parodied with Asakura claiming to be a member of the Radical Big Four, which is quickly revealed to be under the three leaders, all of whom are shown as generic featureless silhouettes. Kyon proceeds to call it cheesy and blame it on Yasu.
• Slapstick Knows No Gender
• Slow-Motion Pass-By - In episode 12.
• Spinning Clock Hands - While Haruhi and the other girls prepare chocolate sculptures.
• Spit Take - Kyon's understandable reaction to finding out what Yuki was doing on her laptop.
• Squee - An in-story example is Haruhi's reaction to cornering "Santa". Her angrily-flushed cheeks visibly give way to a Luminescent Blush, and the resulting squeal echoes throughout the solar system, and even the galaxy.
• Stuff Blowing Up
  • When Nagato ties Achakura to a bunch of hydrogen-filled balloons, they float to the ceiling, hit the lights, and blow up the apartment.
  • Also, Kyon blows up during the filming of a drama. Haruhi's comments indicate that he does this on a semi-regular basis.
  • There's even a Time Bomb involvement in episode 24.
• Super-Deformed - The predominant art style.
• Super Window Jump - Via Ninja Maid.
• Surreal Theme Tune
  • Warning! The following song has been known to cause violent head explosions! Proceed at your own risk. The lyrics may or may not be relevant to the show. Nobody's really sure.
  • The ending theme is somehow even more infectious than the opening. Something about it is so unbelievably cheesy that it rolls all the way over back into awesome. Perhaps it's the fact that the lyrics turn out to be one massive troll to the fans about Season 2.
• Sweat Drop
• Theme Tune Cameo - In episode 4, Mikuru hums "Hare Hare Yukai".
• Tsundere - Achakura.
• Villain Decay - Parodied Trope. Achakura attempts to avert this shortly after Coming Back Wrong by escaping from Yuki's apartment in order to kill Kyon, but rapidly changes her mind after a cat starts eyeing her up for lunch.
• Wall Jump - Achakura attempts this in episode 10. Guess how it turned out.
• What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?
  • Supersonic dodgeball. With Battle Auras.
  • The mock kaiju battle in episode 25, with Mikuru as sort-of Mothra and Yuki as Godzilla. Kyon can only watch in stunned silence.
  • And from the same episode - Death Note-style doodling.
  • Mori and Arakawa's various entrances.
• What Do You Mean It's Not for Kids? - In-universe: In the subbed version, Kyon protested that the game Yuki lent him was rated E... but that didn't stand for "everyone" in this case.
• What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic - This part in episode 14.
• Wiki Walk - Lampshaded, complete with step-by-step explanation.
• Wire Dilemma - Yuki sets one up for Achakura and Kimidori to solve in episode 24. They don't even bother.
• Written Sound Effect - All the time.

• Unwilling Suspension - Mikuru in episode 25.

• Vocal Evolution - A version of it. Haruhi's voice is more high pitched and sounds more similar to Konata then her main anime counterpart.
• X Meets Y - Haruhi Suzumiya meets Lucky Star.
• Yaoi Fangirl
  • Haruhi's script for The Gift of the Maid II: Stealing Love Within a Month of Death has Kyon and Itsuki winning the battle-maid tournament and becoming a couple. Haruhi witnessing Kyon's discovery of a "barrier to the heart" put her in a short-term amnesiac coma.
  • Yuki's visual novel starring the cast included Itsuki and Arakawa as possible paths for Kyon!

I can haz smoked cheez?

Nyoron Churuya-san follows the adventures of Tsuruya's super deformed counterpart Churuya as she quests for smoked cheese, almost always unsuccessfully. Also featured is Ashakura, Ryoko's counterpart with a massive, but ultimately doomed crush on Kyon.

Everyone besides Churuya and Ashakura is rendered with the same generic, non-super-deformed body with Eyes Always Shut, and they're all general jerk asses. Still, Churuya usually gets a happy ending after enduring some hardships throughout the rest of the episode.
