Darren Aronofsky (born 1969) is an American film director, producer and screenwriter, known for producing art-house movies with avant-garde filming techniques. He is a close collaborator with composer Clint Mansell.
He was in a relationship with actress Rachel Weisz (who had a role in The Fountain) from 2001 to 2010. He later had a short lived relationship with Jennifer Lawrence (who starred in Mother) from 2016 to 2018.
Filmography:
- Pi (1998)
- Requiem for a Dream (2000, adapted from the novel)
- The Fountain (2006)
- The Wrestler (2008)
- Black Swan (2010)
- Noah (2014)
- Mother (2017)
He has also been attached to other projects at various times, including an early version of what would eventually become Batman Begins, The Fighter, a remake of RoboCop that died in Development Hell before being released with a different director in 2014 and The Wolverine before James Mangold took over as director.
Darren Aronofsky provides examples of the following tropes:
- Facecam: Used in Pi and Requiem for a Dream, which popularized it. One of the DVD bonus features included with Pi is a clip of Sean Gullette testing out a Facecam while walking around New York.
- Fade to White
- Fan Disservice: Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan. The man somehow managed to make Jennifer Connelly performing a lesbian sex act on stage and Natalie Portman making out with Mila Kunis terrifying.
- Mind Screw
- Production Posse: Matthew Libatique was the cinematographer of his films except The Wrestler and Clint Mansell made the score for all of them. Mark Margolis who plays a main role in Pi, has small roles in all of Aronofsky's following films. Additionally, Ellen Burstyn has roles in Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain and Sean Gullette appears in both Pi and Requiem for a Dream. Stanley B. Herman also plays a Dirty Old Man in Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and Black Swan.
