Over time, different minority groups have been discriminated against and portrayed in the media in a demeaning and sometimes even in a demonizing fashion. For this reason, people in the entertainment industry are eager to show that minorities are not bad people (and can even be important), as well as appeal to every possible demographic. A common form of this, and on particularly rife with Unfortunate Implications, is the Magical Minority Person.
In contrast to the lead, who is definitely in the majority if they are not white and male, the Magical Minority Person they are nicely given is, well, in the minority. Despite being marginalized, though, the Magical Minority Person is always there to share their wisdom with their privileged friend, show them the way, teach them a lesson about tolerance if they happens to be a bigot, and solve all of their problems.
